So I have a problem... I just moved to a new place and got my tank reset with great success only losing an arrow head crab and a single mushroom.
The house I moved to is a beautiful old house built in 1936 but my tank seems to have to much power going through the circuit because if I plug anything additional into the room where the tank is the fuse trips. This sucks because that room was meant to be an office. It looks like I should call an electrician but I thought I would see if there are any solutions that I am missing.

Look at the panel box maybe the whole thing needs to be up graded many older homes in Richmond where I had my business I would say there where some huge 4,000 sq homes with a dual 60 amp service . with 4 fuses .. If you have the panel then you can have a few dedicated circuits ran. But first you have to know the present service amp rating .

if your running actual fuses an upgrade is due. have a 200 amp service put in instead of a 100 amp service. the new boxes these days have breakers, such as square d. when putting in a new box get one that has more slots than what you have already. then just run a couple new lines to the room where the tank is and have a dedicated circuit for the tank.

in my house i put in a larger box with 4 dedicated circuits to my tanks. the upside to that is a circuit specified natural gas generator outside the house. this way the tanks always have power. when you move just take the generator with you and the house is set up for a generator for the entire house.

I have the same problem...I can not run anything else in my living room where my tank is.

I posted a couple weeks ago...my father is director of education at a trade school so he is getting one of the electrician instructors to come out and place a dedicated circuit for my tanks!

Thanks for the advice. All good ideas. I think I'm going to go with an extension cable in the meantime. Moving is expensive enough for now. lol.

just do what I do until the man comes out.....it sucks but I did the extension cord for a while and it got old fast as my pups like to chew on things....

I just turn off the MH lights if I am in the living room wanting to watch TV. I figured when I was out there the most, it was late in the eve so I set the timer for the lights to go off at 6. Due to installers being retards this installation has been going on for months so I have learned that I can leave 1 light on and have TV on...2 lights and TV throws circuit. 1 light and TV with DVD player...blows circuit. Any light and vacuum sweeper too much..so I just dont vacuum.

Plus the lights that they have hooked up are not right so when they get the correct 2nd set of lights it is just going to draw more juice!

I am not totally comfortable with this situation but I am in same boat as you...I just bought this new tank and have to wait until the electrical teachers can come to me so I have to do what I have to do until they can come and/or I can afford it.

plus the install is still not correct.......... Payment has not been completed so it is only affecting them! (been since begining of July). I dont normally call people names but these people I will.....lucky that is all I called them so far

Be carefull with what you are doing. What amp fuse are you blowing?
Many aquariums can run up to 8 or more amps of power depending on your lights and pumps.

You do not want older wiring carrying amps anywhere close to the 15 or 20 amp fuse rating.
