A friend of mine has a good size toad stool. She wants to relocate it to a different part of the tank but it is attached to some giant rock in her aquascape.

Can she cut it at the stalk and attach it to a smaller rock with a cable tie / string / rubber band?

Will it attach itself in a week or two just like a piece of Xenia?

Is the animal at risk from this process?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Adam - I know that if you cut the top of a toadstool a new top will grow on the stump thats left on the rock

to propogate these corals , many people including myself have cut a ring about 3cm wide around the top and then devide the ring into 4 or 5 sections - and each of these sections will grow into a new toadstool - banded onto a piece of rock and left in a low flow area until they self adhere, and then band is removed (cut away)

based on the above knowledge , IMO, I believe it is possible to cut and transplant the toadstool as is being suggested

although if its big you may find trouble securing it to the new rock ( easy with small frags , not so easy with larger pieces)

Thanks. Yesterday in a LFS a good guy told me that in his opinion - He would cut it and sew / band it to a rock but not the cut area. He said he would attach it so that the cut area can heal and the side of the toad stool touches the rock and it will attach there.

He also said he would dip it in Lugols or an Iodine dip.

That's good advice. Keep in mind that whatever flesh is left behind at the original spot after the cutting will most likely grow into a new toadstool :)
