    Hi,

I have a new toadstool leather coral. It has not opened up since it has been in my tank, and looks rather bloated like it is covered with a cellophane bag.

Are these the normal signs of molting? Are there any things I can check to make sure it is doing OK?

Livestock include 1 scopas tang, 1 kole tang, and this coral only in a well-cycled 55g--all water parameters are excellent; NH3, NO2, NO3=0; pH=8.2-8.3; calcium=450, KH=14. I'm keeping the tank at 78 deg C, SG=1.022. There's a CPR protein skimmer. And good water movement (KoraliaX2).

    Thanks for any insights, Todd

My new leather just stopped shedding thin plastic pieces too, and right after he straigned up and got little bumbs all over him. Guess they secrete something like a slime to protect themselves from quickly changing chemical presences, ie nitrates/phosphates. Im just guessing that but someone will come by and tell me if im wrong :)

Yep thats pretty much right. They shed a mucus after they recover from being stressed.

Once that layer sheds don't let it touch another coral. Those things can have alleopatheic toxins.

think of it like this they are in a new atmosphere and they have a jacket on. they need to get comfortable and then they take the jacket off......
