I have had this toadstool leather for going on 8 years now. It was my first coral and I am getting concerned that it is going to engulf my tank here soon (well over 12" in diameter)!!! It's the centerpiece of my tank and my clarke clown, who is also 8 years old and is the self proclaimed king of the tank, could not live without it.

The toadstool is connected to the two largest pieces of live rock in my tank and I don't think I could get it out in one piece....There is a question here somewhere!...So I guess what I am curious about is - Do corals have a lifespan? and Is this thing ever going to stop growing?

    :-/:-/:-/

Imo it looks awesome. I wouldn't even mess with it.
If you really wanted you could frag some chunks off it just to keep it in check.

As for how big and how long it can go I have no idea. I have a toadstool that I got when it was about 3 inches across and now its pushing about 10. I just let it go.

As far as I know corals don't really have a lifespan, they just keep growing as long as conditions permit it. You could always frag it but if I remember correctly, it is strongly advised against fragging it while it's still in the tank as softies release some nasty stuff when cut. So you would have to take it out to frag it but I would double check on that first.

Taking it out would require tearing the reef apart. Sounds like I had better "embrace" the giant toadstool. Since I got my new LED lights it just seems to be exploding in size!!

Guess it will be a good excuse to get a bigger tank (started with a 10 gallon, then 30, then 55, then 80 and now at a 125...);)

Is that really a 125?? I'd swear it was in the 40-50 range lol Great looking tank and toadstool either way. Leave it!

It's an oceanic half-round tank, yes? I agree though, it looks just fine. Chop bits off if you want less ;)

*Edit* Yup, need to refresh more often. I see the post prior to me now. :)

If you want it out, whack it off at the bottom and frag it up. Best part about that is what ever you leave on the rocks will grow into another toadstool, allot smaller but another Toadstool. When and if you do cut it use a scalpel or other razor and try to make it one smooth cut. Using Scissors tends to smash the flesh and can hurt it.
