So I had my second tonsillectomy in my life on friday. I had my tonsils removed as an young child however due to chronic infections of throat and surrounding tissues they chose to do another tonsillectomy and remove other tissue/muscle from my throat. Let me tell you, this is horrible. To avoid swallowing, I am sitting here with a towel and spitting into the towel instead of swallowing my own fluids. The pain is ridiculous, I will have to call tomorrow to order more meds.

My only advice for any who has to have this done in the future is to prepare. Get a whole lot of soft foods/liquids. You will need at least 2 weeks recovery time (this is what I have researched and the doctor said). Things are going to get worse before they get better but once the scabs over the wounds fall, the pain will peak but will recover quickly after that. I really am not looking forward to days 7-10 when this happens, however I just want it to be done. Day 3 starts tomorrow...

In my free time ive just worked on my tank a little and tried to distract myself with video games. Very frustrated though... :(

Yea. When do you plan on taking yours out? Tomorrow will be day 5, the areas they have cauterized are scabbing and should fall off within a few days, then I should be on the road to recovery from there. Man, I am in a lot of pain though. Its like that type of pain where you have to like shake something (your leg) or smack your hand on your leg, when you swallow.... its that bad. Depending on how you respond to pain medication, what level of drugs your comfortable taking, discuss your options with your doctor. I have had a bad surgical history with oxycodene (made me puke everywhere) so I am maxed out on vicodin. In my opinion, even taking the maximum dosage of vicadin, I feel as though it is not helping at all. But thats just me, this is my 3rd surgery in my life and I dont feel vicodin has helped me very much.

I watched my wife give birth to our kids and come out smiling and laughing the same day.
Then I watched her cry and be in pain for a long time when she had hers out at age 36.
    I feel for you

My God that sounds awful. I wanted to die when I had strep a few years ago so I can't imagine how I'd feel if I had to go through what you're going through. I sure hope that the pain goes away soon. Too bad you can't sleep through it!

ya...i had mine out as a young adult. to make it worse they were infected when they operated so i was already sick and weak. to make it EVEN worse i am not "allowed" to take any pain meds so i really suffered, didnt eat any solids for well over 2 week...possible the worst experience of my life.

    i feel(felt) your pain.

Same here. My throat was having a chronic infection (literally a lump with puss on it, sorry for the details). This was behind my tonsil area, so it wasnt tonsilitis. I did 4 sepereate courses of antiobiotics which had little to no help. At least the infected tissue is removed and they have sent it to the pathology lab. My ENT doctor is confident that everything is benign though. On a happier note, woke up spitting up blood this morning.

This is a good thing! It means my scabs have been falling off and healing. Ironically the pain is a bit better today, I still hurt like hell swallowing, but yesterday was possibly the worst pain of my life. Thats saying a lot considering I have had knee surgery, thumb surgery, and a bacterial infection that was eating my intestinal lining last year which put me in the ICU.

When people say tonsil surgery as an adult is painful and serious, they arent joking... I just hope the pain keeps lowering as what I have read shows some days r just hit and miss.

    Thanks for the support 3reef!

I try to sleep as little as possible for extended durations. What i would suggest for those that have to get this done is to take little naps here and there. That way your not sleeping for hours on end and allowing your throat and mouth to dry out.

Also one thing to note, I have almost lost 10 pounds in 1 week. Shocking, i know.
