OK, I found a local source for plexiglass. Since I'm looking at building a Large sump in the basement for the 300 it looks like I can build a 96x34x18 sump/refug/propogation if I max the use of the plex I'll need to buy for the sump I originally planned. If I did my math right, that works out to a total volume around 240 gal. for overflow capacity and around 180+ operational.

Am I loopy for going that route? I was only looking for sump in the 120 gross range. Bigger is better, but 240/180? ::) I like overkill and can't see any major disadvantages aside from needing to change more water to hit a specific percentage, but...?

So, will someone out there shoot some holes in this for me? The little voices in my head are having too much fun with the prospect of a 240 gal sump.

    Thanks,

    Bruce

no holes here. i can't see you having to do more water changes just larger ones

You could divide it out and have a section as a fuge.

Only problem I see is a fuge needs a slow flow, and if you are propping SPS coral, they need pretty strong flow.... ;D

Have you thought about adding a water change holding tank into the mix. Once you get to 500+ gallons, it might be nice to have a 50 or 60 gallon tank that you could mix water in and have it plummed into the main system. Might help expedite the process. Someone put a link up the other day to a site in Oregon where this guy had a set up like that for his large tank. It was really cool! I will see if I can find it and get back to you.

Yes, I mentioned an integrated water change/making station on a older thread. Iwas going to put a barrel on a table over the sump and an extra drain that feeds right into the basement's drain.

    Thanks for the link.

    Details details... ;)

    Good point

Hmmm, 3 return pipes with t valves feeding the skimmer, refug, and prop should do.

BTW, I plan on basing the design on Melvin's 115 monster.
