    was it the simple act of the phone ringing that would make him want to stop?
    did the person on the other end have any significance for him not jumping?

    Oh i got it, He wanted to kill himself because he was depressed that his phone had not rang in a while?

    It didn't matter who was one the phone, just that it rang.

    He was depressed, but not because his phone hadn't rung in a while.

    He was depressed because he thought he was deaf? His career as a sound technician was supposedly gone so he commited suicide. Then he heard the phone and realized his hearing was back and wanted to live. Is that it? ;D

    You need to give better clues Bruce :)

    Surely it does matter who is on the phone, doesn't it? What if the call was an auto dialler? An accident? One of a thousand trained monkeys randomly dialling numbers? An evil, possessed, out of control fax machine?

    This makes sense to me. Maybe not necessarily the sound technician part but that he thought he was deaf and thats why he wanted to commit suicide. Then the phone rang and he realized he could hear after all!
