I have changed my filtration to the berlin sock and have adapted it to where I split it and the overflow goes in two socks instead of one since I went on vacation and did not want it to overflow. And it worked however the noise from the overflow is consistent in noise and it is quite louder than before. I noticed when it is the loudest that the water flow is equal for both sides. I feel the noise is from the overflow in the tank as it is draining down and not from the water flow into the Berlin socks. Any ideas to muffle the sound without too much complication?
    Thanks

Do you use some kind of standpipe in your overflow?

stick a little length of airline tubing in your stadpipe of your overflow - you just have to fine tune it but you should be able to quiet it down some.

There are also some things you can do in your sump to help with sound issues both in the sump and in the overflow itself. Don't get me wrong, I am not a fluid engineer, but I found a post last week on another forum and some guy posted a diagram of a technique to put on your sump end of the drain that he claims helps quite a bit too. I will see if I can dig it up this weekend and send it to you. Might be something to look into more.

    Good luck!

I tried to find the link to the forum I mentioned previously, but have not been able to find it yet. I will keep looking as it had a diagram that helped clarify it. If I do find it I will post it for you. In the meantime I will try to describe below.

Basically, in your sump you can put an elbow that is mostly below the water line, with just the upper end just above the water line. Run an in or two of PVC (it will be of larger diameter due to the elbow which is what you want. The slightly larger size helps to slow down the water a bit (his explanation not mine. I am not a fluid engineer!). Then you put a T at the end with one end pointing out of the water and the other going deeper into the water.

My understanding is that the T allows air/gas to escape up while still allowing the water to go down into the sump. From what I understand this helps to prevent suction and lessens the "flushing" noise you often hear.

I think quite a few folks use something similar, so I am sure you can research and find out more about this. It may help some, and if nothing else it is one more option for you to consider.

This makes a lot of sense. My HOB protein skimmer is effectively set up exactly like this! Should help a ton with salt spray in the sump as well.. I may have to give this a shot!
