so i did a calcium test and its at 500+ according to the red sea kit i have (its just got opened)

i dont plan on have coral in my tank just yet im mainly doing a few fuzzy dwarf lions, a fox face, a cockatoo fish, and a leaf fish. and macro for now

    my other parameters are

    salinity 1.024
    ph 8.0
    alk 3.5-4 meq
    nitrates 20ppm
    ammonia 0
    nitirtes 0
    mag 1320-1400

i have not dosed anything, i use instant ocean salt (not reef crystals)
only fish in right now is a foxface

i might get coral later down the road, i do have a DIY led with blue and white lights on it. but for now im using a DIY rope led light fixture i made for this tank

If you've never dosed anything and you're using IO, there's no way your Ca is that high.

Double check the instructions on that test kit.

But to answer your question, yes. Ca in super high concentrations gets toxic.

+1 on rechecking CA. Along with being toxic at high levels you can get precipitate in the tank if your alk and mag go to high with the calcium.

i guess when i do it i will have to have her with me to catch the color change

That's still a bit high. At 1.024, the cal should be under 400.

Do you use RO/DI water? Tap and bottled "spring" water contain minerals that add to your salt mix.

Did you stir the bucket before using the salt? Sometimes during shipping some components may settle, leaving others more concentrated near the top.

I started with coral life salt then ran out and got instant ocean maybe that did it. Our maybe the test kit it bad. Idk if there is a way to lower the calcium.maybe my diy live rock is causing the calcium to go up.

I roll the bucket around on the floor before I open it
Maybe I need to roll and shake it. I will do a water change and see off that lowers the calcium cause maybe it is the settleing of the salt

470 isn't horrible but it is s little high and would like to bring it down to 400
And I ment to put 1.025 for salinity

How much water have you changed since switching salt brands?

One sure way to find out what's happening- test your freshly made mix before putting it into your tank. If that reads high, then take a sample to your LFS for a second opinion.

While I agree you're not in any danger, you do need to know whether or not your tests are accurate.

Why were you thinking your DIY may be causing the calcium to go up? As Mr. Bill said (it seems I say this a lot :)) it's not really a big deal now but you want to make sure your test kit is good for later on down the road.

FYI, I would not shake your salt bucket. Roll it just like you are doing. Shaking will cause settling, while rolling will actually mix IMO.
