I'm not going to spend a lengthy amount of time to bore all of you fellow reefers, but alot of what we know(or don't know) comes through countless hours of reading, researching, ours and other people's experiences, both positive or negative!
Many times we get steered in the wrong direction either, purposefully or by accident and are offered false information. Unfortunately, all to often it happens right from the get go at the local pet shop!!!! Ill advised info or personel trying to make money off of less knowledgeable novice aquarists for one, or the lack of knowledge presented by the same pet shop employee.
At any rate you, as well as all of us fellow reefers, have and will continue to have pit falls and good times as well. As we all advance in the ever changing world of the marine aquarium hobby, we learn alot of this and can decipher what is and is not pertinent to our overall success of our tank(s).
Just don't get stressed, or pissed off, for lack of a better word, and take everything as constructive info and use everything as a learning tool as this will afford each and every one of us with the motivational tools to enable us, and family and friends, to enjoy the marine hobby for years to come and also for our kids and their kids as well.
Being conscientious aquarists is a big part to this equation in our decision to replicate our own small part of our natural reef environments diverse, unique, entertaining, enjoyable and fragile biotope!!!
Take this for what it is worth, just enjoy the hobby and don't rush into anything foolishly or have any second doubts!!!

    Ricky,
As no two situations or setups are the same there is no magical number or amount of time for a tank to cycle. This is also true about terms such as "reef safe" or some other generalization you find in this hobby.
You will learn a lot the longer you are in the hobby and be more apt to answer your own questions. One thing I do know is research is imperative..8)
Best of luck this is an amazing hobby..

Thanks again for all the advice and help. I hope I have not been too hasty as the last thing I want to do is put these beautiful creatures under any stress or discomfort. I am getting the strong message that patiecne is the key and it will be a while, regardless of what anyone tells, me before I put anything else into my system.

Hey Ricky don't let it get you down man. I see it like this. There are several different ways to use a computer right? Everyone has there own ways of doing things but most of them get you to the same objective. You have to find what works for you personally. As with everything else, there are those who get so involved they feel they need to know exactly how something works, what are the causes, you know all the technical stuff. Then there are those, like me, who tend to be very casual about most things and don't really care about the details as long as it's working. I don't care how the computer works or why, I just want it to work. I have found as long as I go slow and understand the basics of my tank, such as water parameters, everything is cool. Give the inhabitants clean water and the proper food and lighting, your good to go. Don't get discouraged because then the hobby is no longer fun. Enjoy the process and see it as a journey of discovery. Best of luck.

I have started them overnight with live rock and or live sand and then others have run for months yah there is alot of debate on waiting on water issues and such start cheap and work up was always my motto.
Just listen to half the people and pray it was the right half.

No, its not that complicated even though it seems that way starting out. I know exactly how you feel and felt the same way the first few months up and running. I think some good advice starting out is to find a killer looking tank that you like and want to emulate. Find the person who did it and do things there way. Pick there brain. Most successful aquarists are more than willing to share any advice that is asked of them. Keep reading, researching and listening to others but always come back for the final advice from the person with that great tank you like.

If you are waiting for that "right answer" you wont even get water in your tank. Hang in there and good luck.
