I have a 29 gallon tank about 1 month old. Have 3 small green chromis swimming and a small cuc. I recently purchased a marine land maxijet 600 multiuse pump. I plan on getting a vortex mp10 shortly but needed some flow for now.

As a circulation pump it puts out 750 gph. I tried this at first but it was pushing my sand around alot. So I switched it a 160 gph powerhead. I started noticing the surface was getting a protein skim that wouldn't clear from one side and corner, bubbles sitting on top. So I switched back to the circulation pump instead. Found a new position in the middle of the side pointed more up and it's not pushing the sand around as much, but it really seems to be cranking.

Does anyone think that 750 gph is too much for a circ pump in a 30" wide 29 gallon tall? I know the mp10 will be able to put out alot more but it can be dialed down and programmed into cycles. This one is always cranking 24/7. Another option is to put it on a timer maybe? Few hours off then few on? Any ideas?

It should be fine if you aim it at the surface as much as possible. The problem is the narrow area the flow comes from.

Agreed, I don't think that is too much flow. I have (2) Koralia 450s in my 28 nano along with the return pumps (around 250 GPH). With the way my wavemaker works, I can have between 250-1150 GPH at any given time. I certainly don't feel this is too much flow at all!

+1,if you angle it upward and towards the center of the front glass it might work pretty well.

Pointing it upwards has def been helping. Right now I have it on the right side glass dead center. Sailorguy, are you saying I should have it pointed to the front more instead of across the length of the tank, or maybe move it to the back glass middle pointed to the front? I put mine on the side because that's where I see most people's.

I know that having it as a circ pump is the right choice now because after I switched back lots of crap was washed up into the water to get picked out by my filter and skimmer. Tank looks great! And the chromis seem to be enjoying the extra flow, swimming along happily in the new currents.

You might try more in a corner and have it aimed to the opposite corner so you have as much distance as possible before the flow hits the side of the tank.

IMO, I'd place it in the rear middle of the tank about half way down facing the front top middle of the tank. That should create some "random" flow areas until you get you're new one. Should be able to let it run 24/7 like that

+1 to all of the above, you can just try it in all of those places and see what works best. The idea is to bounce it off the glass at some point to spread the flow instead of a more direct stream.

Trying it positioned in the back middle pointing up to the front. Nice dispersion and random flow, can tell by small air bubbles coming out of my HOB skimmer. Werd.
