Well I am just starting my 55 gal. It's been cycleing for around 3 weeks now.
So far I have around 45 lbs of dry rock, 25 lbs of LR and 40 lbs of LS.
I have 2 52 watt T5s VHO 14ks and 2 blue acintics. I plan on getting a Turboflotor Multi SL protein skimmer. I am not going to have a sump or refug.
I would love to have a powder brown Tang but is my tank big enough?
    My ideal fish would be
    1 Powder Brown Tang
A pair of black and white clows (sorry don't know their offical names)
and a pair of mandarin gobys.
Would this be too much for my tank?
I would also have a clean up crew (undecided exactly what yet) and various corals.

No powder brown and mandarins will go in a 55 sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
The powder will get to big for the tank and the mandarins will not survive from lack of food.

I agree with scenario you would need a very good pod population to support even one mandarin let alone two. as beautiful as they are a powder brown is to big or will get to big for a 55.

In one year you can have one mandarin and just buy some bottled copepods every few months and you should be ok

I know I have to have a steady supply of copecods for Mandarins. That wasn't really my question.
But thanks for the answer about the Powder Brown. I guess ill just have to admire from afar.

You'd be fine for at least a few years with a juvenile powder brown. Just let the tank mature for 5 months or so before adding the juvenile PB, as well as the mandarin. Casey has a mandarin in his 55 as do many others. It's fine as long as it will eat, and it doesn't need the swimming room of any tank bigger than a 55. The powder brown tang won't really know it's being deprived either until it gets over 4 inches or so, even then they are skinny fish.:)
