My LFS owner gave me an additional powerhead for my 24 gallon reef aquarium. So I installed it and had both of my pumps running. It seems like too much water is circulating through the aquarium. They are both 290 GPH pumps. Is this too much flow for one 24G aquarium?

your only at 24x turnover / hour not including the return pump, i think it should be fine as long as your not causing a sand storm or dead spots in the tank. my 125 is at 40x turnover including the return + 3 powerheads.

He doesn't look to have a fuge, so a return is not factored into his total turnover. He is pushing close to 600gph in his tank with powerheads alone, which is about 30x. That's ok, but in a small tank like a 24G cube, you can see sand storms and vortex swirls. If you can dial back the pump a bit, it may help.

As long as your inhabitants are happy I wouldn't sweat it as long as you don't have any sandstorm issues. Right now I have something like 1300gph not including the return in a 29g, just make sure you place any corals where they are happy.
