    How much weight is too much to put on a second floor?
    I have my 55 gallon aquarium on it and I am looking to add substrate that will add probably around 100 pound to the weight of the tank. Could it be an issue for a 55 gallon aquarium. I know there are a lot of factors, but what is the general rule of how much weight you could have?
    Thanks :)

    I don't see where you should have a problem... If the house was built according to local code, you'd be in more danger of the cabinet collapsing than the floor falling through.

    Yeah ceiling joists are usually on 2' centers and if they are for a 2nd floor they can even be on 12' or 16' center and are made of at least 2x6's, they can hold tons...literally.

    OK good :D
    I was pretty sure they can hold a lot, but I wanted to be sure.
    Better safe than sorry ::)
    THANKS!

    I would definately recommend a tank in your room, Sean. ::)
    It is great because you can watch it pretty much any time of the day, and it is much easier to work on the tank when it is in your room.

    +1

    Don't forget that the 1st floor walls are also designed as load-bearing walls for the 2nd floor. :D

    Good rule of thumb, all outer walls are weight bearing walls.
