    I just found a volcano skimmer cheap!rated for 1000g!
My first thought was no way that's way too much skimmer for my new tank, total system will be about 300g.but after thinking about it why not i mean it will only skim what it can right so whats the problem, did i mention how bad a$# this thing looks.
any input good idea, bad idea?If so why?

Looks like I'm getting it :) I'm going next week when I get home to check it out and pick it up if it's good to go.
Anyone have any experiance with volcano skimmers from what I've been able to find on the Internet they are built by someone named Spazz?
It doesn't appear he is in business anymore anyone know?

There is a such thing as overskimming. Going one size larger is fine, but you are talking 700G too large. You will end up skimming out trace elements in your system and you will either have to dose the heck out of your tank just to keep up with the elements that are being stripped out of your system, or your animals will die and you won't be able to figure out why.

i searched for 'overskimming saltwater' and found plenty of articles. i have to agree that you can definitely overskim your tank. just my opinion though.

Marine Depot has an article about skimming:
    Protein Skimming
The writer admits that it was difficult to overskim when skimming was new to the hobby, but how efficient the new skimmers have become, overskimming is a definite reality.
When I went to buy my Bubble King skimmer I talked to Royal Exclusiv's US distributor and asked him if I should get the 180 or the 200. He talked me out of getting the more expensive 200 and heavily suggested the 180 instead. He said "how efficient these skimmers work, you will overskim your tank and you will be dissatisfied with the overall performance of the 200, definitely stay with the 180." That told me a lot.

    check this link out:

I wouldn't say it is a PROBLEM, just a note that too much skimming can remove trace elements...
