im still learning. so my next question is , do torches grow new heads by splitting? or by growing a whole new shoot?

i would say buy splitting or budding what every you call it. a new shoot must start on the living part of the coral(fleshy heads). as those are the individual polyps. the skeleton or shoots(not fleshy) is just a skeleton the polyp leaves behind, so its not alive and wont grow anything out of it.

Mine right before it split looked like a figure 8 shape then two different heads I would say a week later.

I have a candy cane that splits like mad.
