    I don't know, but I agree.

In many areas of Missouri, like mine, everyone has basements. That's where you would want to be. In other areas, the only way to have a basement is to pay a whole lot of money to dynamite out through the limestone (at one time a long, long time ago, much of MO was a coral reef so that's why there's so much limestone). People who live in those areas need some sort of shelter.

As far as supplies, there's always at least 42 gallons of pure water in a food-safe Brute trash can in the basement. There's always additional water though.

I don't know about the rest of the state. In St. Louis, if a tornado is spotted in an adjoining county, yours goes off too. You can hear the ones in an adjoining county. What that means is that if one hears sirens in another county and yours isn't going off yet, actual sightings are at least 2 counties away. I heard St Charles County, MO and Madison County, IL but my sirens weren't going yet. Being from where you are, you probably won't understand my response. I decided to walk the dogs and hit the convenience store real quick. St. Louis always seems to avoid them to a large degree. Occasionally one will drop down and do some localized damaged but never anything like Oklahoma City. One dropped 4 or 5 miles from here right by the Mississippi River tonight but I didn't find any fish nor turtles in my yard. I don't really worry about tornados but I'm also not stupid. Just because St. Louis tends to barely get hit, it doesn't mean it never will.

99.99% of the people in my city have never seen nor experienced a tornado. They always seem to go around us. I don't worry about going to sleep. The alarms are loud and unlike most St. Louisans, I've seen many tornadoes. They have a sound all their own....just like you've heard on TV, they do sound like a train. If I hear that sound, it will be "basement city" real quick.

A question is a question. I don't find them silly. I'm an odd bird. When bad storm warnings are out, most people head inside. I choose to head outside. I find storms fascinating.

    Hang in there![/QUOTE]

    Reefmonkey,
wow.....it really is a whole "lifestyle" in a way based on where you live. I guess it would be similar for those in the hurricane zones...

I really feel for you. I would be terrified. My daughter and I were driving back from Virginia Beach a few years ago and went through the remnants of one of the "named" storms down that way - it was the worst rain and most terrifying experience weatherwise that I have been through - and to think it was only the remnants. They kept mentioning tornado warnings and watches etc and we kept watching...all very scary for someone like me coming from NY.

I will definitely keep all of you 3reefers who live in these zones in my thoughts.

thanks so much for giving me some personal insight on living in a zone like you do.

    +K

    Curt,

it was awesome reading your perspectives too. I would have hit the nearest shelter too if i heard alarms! It is good that you can hear sirens from further out first - at least you know something is going on.

These storms fascinate me too. I always watch the shows about them but again seeing them from the comfort of my chair is far different than what so many of you go through.

    Be well through this season.

    thanks for the response!

For some reason I was under the impression you lived in OK. Good gawd I seriously hope your part of the country gets a break soon! I've been flipping back and forth watching it on the news and right around 7pm there were warnings covering parts of 3 states!
    Stay safe!

Forget that! When the one formed right above our house my wife and I were outside looking at the rotation in the storm. She said we got to go now and I looked up over this huge maple in our front yard and saw this grayish green worm coming down fast. I took off for the basement! Every person for themselves brother! When we got down there I got po'd cause I kept hearing this shrill screaming that sounded female..then I realized it was me...
