    Bum deal.

On the brighter side, your next setup will probably look better than the last.

I know there are a few things I would have done differently when I setup my tank.

    Karma for your loss.

i know how you feel man I lost my whole tank after treating with that stuff to not sure if it was because I was treating with that or if it was the reason in the first place I had to treat with that but either way I feel your pain i was so heart broken and felt like quitting myself but right now I decided to take a different route started gettin some corals instead of fish right now.

been there had tons of problems

    HI,
have you figured out whats causing the Cyano problem, something isn't working, how big was the tank are you exceeding the limits of the filters/skimmer, is there to much waste/food. My guess was the waste poisioned the fish after the skimmer shut off you were probabl just keeping up with the production, maybe a skimmer upgrade I have a 65 coralife and220 coral life they both seem to fill up pretty quick.
Types of food can increase phos flakes may have the highest amount of phos per once of protein, i love those myosis frozen shrimp I always wash them well before feedig it may reduce the strain on the system., i love using a DSB its a buffer for toxic waste the snerobic bacteria keep ammonia and nitrogen zero. I have two skimmers on one sump that has a light and a shoe box full of cheto the sump has 6 ft of pvc pipe burried under a screen all cut to fit the tank only water in the pvc with 5 inches of fine sand and a small coral life light for the plants.. I have two marineland filters one with media the other has carbon that I change every other week. plus rinse the filter media weekly its usally full of stuff sediment when its loaded with calcium carbonate the water flow slows, the returns reall churn the water. The 55 has penguine pigback filter with simple filter pads that I rinse every 4-5 days they usally are pretty messy. this increase water flow.most pumps seem to slow after about a month of running more calcium build up.
I tend to run the skimmer pretty wet some say that helps remove soluable waste better.
lots of water change at least 5 gals a week I let the water age at least 2 days and be near room temp never put fresh synthetic water in a tank.
I measure KH,CA,Phos , MAg , if phos is greater than 1 i run a cheep 2fish phos reactor and it goes to -1 over night.
I watch my inverts and my aneome if they are acting sick or the anemoe is closed up or puking something is really off.
My temp is 78 no sunlight in the tank the lights are pretty good but not halide.
I would wash that sand or replace, get some live sand at a LPS after its been running a week or two, I have alot of live rock that was base rock, I blow it off as needed if it looks dirty. and blow a little of the top layer of sand to see if its loaded with detri the marinelands and the penguins will catch it once stired up a bit Lot of nassirus snails in the sump also numerous worms thet my LPS was glad to catch and give me for free as long as I bought something
Which of the above measures keep it going, not sure but over kill maybe a good buffer for disaster. Try to improve all possiable filters add a sump I used a 20 gal tank and a small reforguim in the sump may help buffer waste products.
