The tank i currently have has started to leak, so i recently purchased another tank. Right now i am currently in the process of getting the new tank up to the right salinity. what would be the best way to transfer the old tank into the new one with little stress on the plants and live rock.

Im a newb but I would say if the new tank is in the same location as the old, after all levels look good just put everything in a 18g Rubbermaid tub and transfer everything over to your new tank.

You say you are getting the salinity right in your new tank? Are you starting a completely new one/ cycling?

IMO, your best bet would be to transfer all contents of your old tank to your new one- all the water, substrate, live rock, equipment, etc. That will create the smallest change for the inhabitants and you shouldn't have a mini cycle.

The only thing that may be tricky is if you have a deep sand bed in your old tank. Stirring that up can release trapped "bad things" (for lack of a better term).

It would help to know a little more about your set-up, that way everyone has an idea what you are dealing with and provide a better answer.
