I bought some red slime remover by "ULTRA LIFE" from my LFS. The instructions mention only how much is to be mixed given a certain volume of water.

Nothing is mentioned about running a skimmer and/or filter during the treatment.

Would it be safe to assume that skimmer and filter should not be run for the first days or so?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks all.

I have not used the product, but I have read enough posts on this board in the last three years to know that it will drive your skimmer crazy and you should not run carbon either. :)
I'm sure it is in the instructions somewhere....

I would shut down the mechanical and chemical filtration for a few days IMO! To avoid the unecessary removal of the medication etc.!

    That's what I've done.

Shut skimmer down, removed all media from the filter and using the filter for flow only.

    Thanks.

SSSNAKE, the best remedy for ridding your tank of the cyanobacter(blue-green algae) aka "Slime", "smear", "grease" is to have excellent protein skimming!!!! And the use of antibiotics, will kill the outbreak initially, however, it WILL come back! Skimming is really the only way to rid it as cyanobacteria grows under intense lighting and large amounts of DOC! Cyano is also common around the base of soft corals(Sarcophyton) and known commonly as Black-band disease!

I've shut down the skimmer for today and probably tomorrow to give this dose a chance to carpet a good portion of the nasty red slime. I will skim more vigorously when it's turned back on. My lighting period has also been decreased.

Feeding has already been decreased a good two months ago, and, regular maintenance complete with water changes is occuring more often than before but not to the point whereby I will shock the system.

(Fingers & toes crossed) ...... wish me well!

    Thanks.

Make sure you run some manner of something to keep your water oxygenated. When you dose the product it will suck all the oxygen out of your water. You WANT to run either an air stone or point all your pumps towards the surface to keep things airy.

Also cyano comes from high phosphates. You;ll be dosing red slime remover every two weeks until you figure out where your phosphates are coming from and figure out a way to remove them.

Frozen food that hasn't been thoroughly rinsed will add insane amounts of phosphate.

Flake foods, excess nori or other uneaten foods and tap water all add tons of phosphates. A Phosban reactor is a good way to snatch up all those phosphates and keep cyano from coming back.

    Hi

    Hi,
My only concern would be will it kill inverts, and other critters in the sand bed, and will it disrupt your bacteria flora, almost every medication you use has side effects. You may kill the cyano and wipe out the good sand bed flora and have to re-cycle. many of aneobic bacteria are extremly sensative to drugs.
I ve read somewhere to reduce feeding and siphon out the cyano and do more water changes check you phos and ride it out.
