Im looking into trigger fish for my reef tank and would like to get some input on this. Spec on what I have is a 46 bow with about 60 lbs of LR and a 3in sand bed and a lot of softies and a good size cuc. What would size of fish to start with and what kind of trigger and how many could I get by with.

    Thanks Eric

I myself can not think of a trigger that could go in that size of tank. A trigger also might make short order of your cuc and disrupt your scape and corals. They really belong in much bigger tanks.

When I window shop for fish I like to look at Liveaquaria.com.

+1 Triggers need a much larger tank then what you own and as stated they will wipe out your cuc. They can also have a tendency to rearange your rockwork. Not a good choice.

I know first-hand that they can and will take large bites out of corals. They're also very messy eaters which doesn't work well in a reef tank.

I know it sucks to hear this, but I have to agree that a 46 gallon is probably too small for a triggerfish. I know mine is the most active fish in my aquarium. Your tank really should be longer so the fish can swim in long side to side motions.

I have a HumaHuma in a 125 and it has never picked at coral and even lives peacefully with two cleaner shrimp. However, my fish is an exception to the rule.

Lucky, in my younger inexperienced days I had a huma huma in my 55 (too small in my opinion(he was tiny when i got him but almost doubled in a couple months time). Triggers are neat fish but i think that was my last experience I will have with a trigger seeing as it killed nearly everything in my tank. Hence his doubling in size he ate like a king.

I'd guess ya have to limit feeding, and practice good maintenence! Ya'd have to be the CUC!
