Trigger Tank

Hey all..

I know about the rule for tangs, atleast 4 feet long tank for swiming. But is there a rule like that for triggers. My girlfriend wants to switch from FW to SW and i was thinking of a FOWLR but just triggers... a trigger tank. The tank is a 25 gal (24" long x 18" high x 12" wide i think). is that enough rom for triggers, not gonna fill it up with 10 fish but atleast a couple.

Well, I know Triggers, because of their diet, are "dirty" fish. They can also get relatively large.

Water quality may be difficult in a smaller tank...perhaps a canister filter or diatom filter would be beneficial in addition to skimming????

I have not really kept them and am not sure...but hopefully someone who knows can chime in here?

She hasn't taken a shine to any smaller fishies?

 

Birdlady is right, they are sloppy eaters and can get to be rather large. (Most appox. 6"?)

So I'd beef up the filtration with a good skimmer and maybe a canister or diatom like BL suggested and think about a much bigger tank.

I had a Picasso trigger in my 40 breeder. He was pretty mellow for a trigger - for what it's worth.

 

No way! I currently have 2. A small niger 4-5" in my 72 and a clown 7-8" that's currently in my 55 hospital. He came out of my old 130 and will end up in my 210. Triggers need LOTS of water and are quite aggressive. Also, multiple triggers in the same tank is playing with fire. Be careful!

They are neat though aren't they... I really want to go reef, but a 210 Angel, Trigger, Tang FOWLR tank for the office just sounds so... tempting Sigh, I'm showing my age again. I did my 1st marine tank back in 81. We didn't even know how to spell reef. It may take the next tank before I take the plunge for a full reef. By that time, I wonder how big I'll go... each tank has been 50% bigger than the last. hmmmm

But I digress. Score points. Go find her a used 55 to upgrade to if you like triggers. I spent a whopping $60 on my 55 hospital with a home made w/d and stand. Of course, I have another $100 or so dropped into upgrades. Matt had a trigger in a 40. Go for it!

 

YOu can keep BABY triggers together no prob in a 25....but not mature ones without a 25-30 gallon sumpstyle filter and bucko filter media! Blade's right trigger mixing is a roll of the dice at best. I would shy from any triggers in a 25. I have a Clown trigger that is only 5".......he beat the crud outta a queen trigger that is a bit over twice his size and ripped the guts outta a full grow velvet damsel UPON introduction to a big tank. He gets his own 50.

 

wow ... ok thanks allot you guys. I do have a fluval 304 already hooked on the 25 gal and i will be adding a skimmer on it when i upgrade my 55 to a 120. why dont you keep the 55 they ask!!! no space. we live in an apartment so space is limited, a 120 in the living room and a 25 in the kitchen is already border line (specially the 120 in the living room if you ask my girlfriend ). Alright then ill stay away from the triggers for now. ill wait until i get more space then ill do my trigger tank. I understand your concern about having many triggers in the same tank but i got the idea from my cousin who has what i think is a 30 gal full of triggers, atleast 5 or 6, he has a wet/dry filter, not sure about a skimmer though. I just love those fish...

so anyways thanks allot you guys (and gal ), ill keep away from the triggers for now.
