Trio of tangs

Well im finally getting a hold on what the 100 gallon can hold, and trying to narrow down the list, lol. In your experince would a trio of yellow tangs work in a 100 gallon?? I like alot of other tangs and angel fish, but they all get around a foot long . I feel bad when I have a fish that big in a tank were it cant swim. But the yellow tang will get around 8 inches, and seams to be the right temperment for my tank. I have a pair of clowns ( cinnamon female 4 inches, and a tomato male 2 inches) two azuer damels all around 2 inches and territorial. And one 3 inch neon dottyback. i would like to add one flame angel, one watchman gobie ( not sure which one yet), one royal gramma, one fire fish ( purple or red ), and a trio of yellow tangs. I know the tangs are aggressive, but the clowns and the angel will be able to hold there own, and the little guys can hide in the rock if they get chased. Let me know what you think. I would like to get some sleep sometime, lol.

If you are going with three Yellow Tangs, get them small and add them all together and you should be fine! Just be careful of the water quality with the amount and size of the fish in your tank.

thanks CR. I was also thinking 3 would add a big bio-load to the tank. Im just throwing out ideas right now, and getting a feel of what other people have done. I would go with one, but then I would have the most common fish ever, lol. I figured 3 would bring a different look, to the tank. I agree completly with adding all three at the same time, as for most tangs. Im just looking for the main show piece fish for the tank without going over board, or getting an angel that will eat all my corals, lol. You know I was asking about the emporer a few days ago. But now ive moved on. I want to get some corals without having to worry to much about them getting munched on. I know there are risks with the flame angel, but there mouth is not as big, lol. It seem like you know alot about everthing CR!! Im glad your on our side, . It is always nice to read info from you!!

Thanks for the compliment Michael!!!! I wish I knew more than I do. I like to read alot and spend alot of time here at 3reef to learn and hopefully help fellow reefers as well, and if I can save a coral, invert and/or fish along the way, it makes it more worthwhile.
Check out the site I posted to help ya with Tangs. You may want to go with a Purple or Sailfin Tang, though you don't want to combine the two(same body type) family don't mix as aggression normally results.

As A show piece you may want to check out the many brilliant colored Flasher and Fairy wrasses. The are excellent reef inhabitants and are mild mannered as well.

You welcome CR. On the subject of different tangs, wouldnt a sailfin get to big for the tank. I know they can get like a foot and a half long, . I am also considering a yellow and hippo. I really agree with you about the fairy wrasses, they come some very bright colors. You know youll hear from me every step of the way, lol.

 

What size is your tank? I had a Sailfin in my 30 hex until it died awhile back. They grow slow and are so unaggressive. Mine did a good job of keeping microalgae in check. If it gets to large for you tank eventually, trade it for another one or a different family of Tangs!

 

In mine I have 1 purple tang that is abot 4 ". And a bristle tooth tang about the same size. I just love the tang species. I want to get another one but dont know what species as cant get them if they look alike. CR true I love my fairy wrasse. Is it me or does the colors in it bring out the tank more.

 

I have a 100 gallon. It is 6 feet long. If they grow slow then it mite not be so bad, to start with a small one, and see if it adjusts to the size of my tank as it gets bigger. I just dont like cramming fish in tanks. I had an oscar for like 4 years in a 55 and felt it was to small of a tank. And he was the only fish in there. Ill do some more reading and see what to do. Now that the tank has cycled, im looking harder into the fish to get. I just want to get an idea, so I can get all the non-aggressive fish first. How soon should sailfins be added?? I like the idea of a big dog in the tank, lol. I love fish with personality, .

 

The yellows should be fine just like CR said add them small and all at once. I was thinking of adding three blue tangs in the near future to my 90.
