Hope this is the right place...

We have all been in a LFS before and thought, "wow, I have to get that fish!!"... then seconds later we think "is it reef safe, will it fight with my current fish, will it eat my shrimps" "How big does it get, what size tank will I need, etc etc"

Is there an android app that is similar to LiveAquaria... a reference app for tropical fish that are common in aquarium trade that would answer some basic questions about the fish while we are standing in the LFS.. Allowing you to see something and have more to go on than the 17 year old kid saying it's reef safe.

I have looked and searched for one as well. I havent see any that really catch my eye & get good all around reviews.

I've gotten a few nasty looks for doing it but I just keep liveaquaria & 3reef as favorites on the phone & check them out. lol.

I've never used an internet phone before, so I have to ask- Can you Google with an Android?

Nasty looks from whom? The LFS employee? Who cares?! As if they would give u your money back when u realize they sold u a baby grouper for your nano. I've seen this with my own eyes and jump on the sales persons neck. Of course, now I'm not as welcome to that store as I used to be.

I do see some potential. I wonder if some of the people operating 3reef can build a paid app of this sort and use it to support the site as well.

    I think its a winner.

You can google on a phone just fine. But apps make the information much more accessible, and it's a lot faster through apps than through basic internet searches.

I'm shocked Live Aquria doesn't have one.. My Toyota store in South Mississippi even has an android app lol.

I know, there's an app for everything and from everybody!

That's why I was thinking, maybe it would be a good idea to set something up with 3reef.com and promote the site as well as making a few bucks for programming the app, updating it, etc. I really do wish I could program. I haven't touched code in 12 years and have no idea what these apps (droid, iphone or windows phone) are programed on.

    Anyone likes the idea?

That would be awesome Magnus!! It would be really cool if you could have comments section on each fish where people can give personal reviews and observations in addition to the technical data.

Even if you haven't touched code in awhile, Google Labs has a 'App Made Easy' program, literally a drag and drop. I have been thinking about making an app like this with a built in logger so you can check tank age, tank params, stock, compatibility, recent searches etc. I could make this app (sans logger) in around 5 days or less, it will take longer to add more fish info and things. I can get started and release a source for a few programmers here to 'pretty it up' with normal Java.

It's a great idea! Sadly, I too, can't program. I haven't written code since the first release of Windows (worked mainly on non- MS-DOS machines). lol

I can say that different phones have different OSes- the Windows phone obviously runs a mobile version of Windows, iPhone runs a Mac OSX variant, still others use either Windows or variants of Linux that may not be compatible. IOW, to accommodate everyone, you'd need to be capable of altering or rewriting the app to work with the different phones...

I think it still could be done, though. :)

I know this is pretty far out, but I do have quite a bit of time while at work most of the times and I could start compiling info on the fish, etc. I wouldn't know how to make the app pretty. But I think if we all put our heads together we can come up with something nice, and refine it as we go and get reviews. I have an HTC Inspire (same as desire) wich runs android (rooted) so I can start researching. This sounds way too cool to not look into it.

Yes, that's one of the barriers, I have no idea about Mac OSX, and I'm way more than rusty on Linux, but we can work something out and give it a try. Maybe also more people would get on board and contribute. Any programmers interested out there?
