Yep title says it all. I've been awake since 3:30 this morning. In "short" the circuit that runs my comp. , tank, furnace, kitchen(yep! everything important) and my well pump(water) is bad. On top of that @ 3:30 when I awoke to a beep (from range clock) and a strange noise from my pump i discovered nothing in my tank was working. In the midst of diagnosing I broke part of my mag 12. All of my circuits only have 1/2 power. Gotta go..... I'll be back to explain more.....

If your pumps are still pumping, even at 1/2 power, your tank will be fine for a long while before things get bad, mainly algae.

I went away on holidays for 3 weeks to europe. Let my brother look after my tank. When i came back 5 days ago, i saw the worst case of GHA/Cyano i have ever seen in my life, in person, or from a picture. Turns out one of my media bags had sucked up into my return pump, so that there was almost no turnover happening from my sump to my display. And when i say worst case of algae ever, i mean it. (and that was likely going on for 2 weeks before i came home and noticed what was happening).

Moral of the story- don't go on vacation.

I'm back. I don't think you quite understand what is going on phayes. There wasn't enough power to run the pump at all. I guess I haven't explained it very well because I have been in a hurry since early this morning. Basically my kitchen failed, my entire system failed, my furnace failed and the pump to my well failed. When I woke up this morning I went straight to my tank(pump) to get it back in order. Unknowingly working on something that wasn't even broken. It took me over an hour to even figure out that there was a serious issue with the circuit that runs all of the above. So, I broke a part on my mag12 that isn't available locally. Sounds like it may be a week til' I get a new one. For now, I have my "old weak" pump circulating my system. My power issue has been fixed. Just need to put my system back together now....

Good luck Casey - Looks like you have your work cut out for you. How much weaker is the old pump?

No smoking here. I did almost reach for a cold HAMMS at 4-ish though. Didn't feel right so I didn't.

I went fro a mag 12 to 600gph. The old 600 is a loud pos to. I haven't even decided how far I should go with putting it back together. As of now system is circulating, heater obviously, 1 powerhead and lighting.

Glad you got it under control. A squirrel got into the transformer the other day and fried it. I had to go to work while power was still down so I was worried all day. My car is my generator for emergencies.. it has a 115AC outlet so I can run the main stuff, but only if I'm home lol.

Do most guys have back up pumps, and/or lights? My lights have given me nothing but trouble from day 1 and if I had a full reef I would have to go a while without lights until an order arrived.
If my main pump died I would have to order something.. I guess I would have to overnight it.
My LFS s are outrageously expensive for those kind of things. Great for livestock though.

Thinking about getting one of those backup batteries that can run pumps a day or 2.

That's probably my worst nightmare, other than my tank crashing for no apparent reason. I really haven't thought of anything to do in case of a power outage!!!
