He looks like a false(Orange coloration of fish ) except for the continuous black from the front white stripe to the 2nd stripe

Wait a second, I thought true percs had more black. All the true percs that I have seen have had way more black than the false percs.

I have to agree with Pack here. They look false to me as well. Too much black.

I am going to have to go ahead and completely disagree with you. I have had a mated pair of true perculas for almost 5 years and they do not swim at the top of the tank. They are either in the anemome or in the middle of the water column.

When I first got them, the male swam at the top for a week or so until he got used to the anemone but other than that I would have to say that swim behavior is not a factor.

I do agree with the spine number. True perculas have 10 dorsal spines while false perculas have 11.

when they lived on the north end of my tank they were always on the top, then they discovered my frogspawn on the floor of the south end and now they hang out towards the bottom. When I got them they had almost no black except for the dividing lines, now they have quite a bit more black

Yeah....I phrased my statement as a 100%. Something I generally try to avoid.....but in general, trues do keep to the top of the tank (in the absence of an anemone of course)

And I would have to (and this is rare) disagree with Pack. True has more black than false. My falsies have barely any black at all. One thing I like about the true's over the false. That black outline is really cool.
