I'm asking about the size of the sump. This phone corrects my spelling wrong. They are having the dollar a gallon sale at petco. Just want to plan ahead of time. I saw some posts about refugiums. Will i be able to intigrate one into my sump, or are they expensive to maintain. Will i be able to start out with no skimmed just a refugium. I plan on having power heads in the tank not just the from the pump. Also I was reading about UV sterilizers. What should i know about thrm?

rubbermaid tubs make a good sump too, you dont need all glass, my sump is a 29 gallon tank with plexi for dividers. but you could make a sump for cheap with a decent size rubbermaid tub some plexi and something to bond the two of them. also you dont need a drilled tank necessarily, they have hang on back overflows or you could even make that too if you're skilled enough, i made mine out of one of those small plastic fish tanks with the slotted lids because itll keep your fish from finding their way into the overflow

You should use the largest tank/sump that will fit into your cabinet. You should also go with the skimmer if you have to choose only one; the skimmer will remove a lot of DOCs that would ordinarily be converted into nitrates. The fuge, however, might not be able to handle the nitrates without a skimmer, depending on your bio-load. Having both would be the best, and no, a fuge is not expensive to maintain.

Sounds good. I will try looking for a good sump. Of you guys could point me in the direction of a good sump that is reliable but one that won't break the budget that would be great. Thanks guys.

Everything sounds good. Great to see a new "Salty" doing research before they jump into the hobby. I did 4 years of research, planning, and not to mention, budgeting before I bought my 90 gallon with 20 gallon sump. I have been running skimmerless for 2 years but that will change in the next month or so keeping up on water changes without one is crazy. I do a 10% change twice a week to remove DOC. I'm in the process of building a fuge for it now and also a 20 gallon reef. I'm excited to watch this build as it grows. Remember, only bad things happen fast. Growth takes time. Keep up the research.

here comes the punny! KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! GEEEE IIII JOOOOOEEEEE

sorry anyways, yes it's better to learn as much as you can before just picking it up, to know about the cycles a tank will go through on first set up, to know that if certain chemicals such as phosphates or nitrates are out of whack can cause ugly results(not deadly just ugly) That copper is death to most inverts and some fish. It's good to have a forum like this in which the free exchange of information can be!

The only problem is sometimes you don't get the BEST of information but normally there are others out there that will quickly correct any incorrect things. Like Mr.Bill He's a great guy! Good at picking up on others mistakes either big or small he's a smart one he is.

Ya Mr bill helps a ton. Guys I've decided on going with a 40 breeder. Petco just but their dollar per gallon sale and i think that it would be a good way to go as my first SW tank. What lights should I start looking at for it? a 2 bulb or 4 bulb t5 fixture? Please link some good lights. I used to have PC odyssea lights that i was really happy with. Are they a good brand to look into? i think that the 40 is a 36 inch tank. Help ma peeps! also, Since having a 40 significantly reduces my initial expenses i will have a sump with fuge in it, what size should this be? would i be okay with a 20 long? and if you have plans for one post em! thanks guys

Sump is whatever size will best fit under or near the tank, As for lights i've heard mixed rumors about Odyssea lights some good some horridly bad. As far as bulbs Id say go with 4 I went with two on a 46bowfront and i'm almost wishing I had more but They do the trick for my few LPS. Make sure if you pick up a 20 long that all the items you want to put in to it will actually fit, skimmer and whatever else? some skimmers have a large footprint.
