I read here in another post that the ocean around reef's has a SG of 1.028 to 1.030 If that is the true reading in the ocean then why do we keep our SG between 1.023 to 1.025?

Would it be better at 1.029?

its in the range the important thing is keeping it constant. I keep mine at 1.026. you could keep it at 1.029 as long as your constant with it.
Whether it is better or not I couldn't answer that.

Its mixed as to if its better or not. I keep mine at 1.027-1.028. I have noticed that this keeps my corals and specially inverts a little bit happier. But at the same time, a lower salinity will help fish from getting/fighting off disease. So theres a plus and minus to both sides.

When I had fish in the tank I noticed that when I brought it from 1.022 to 1.023 and 24 then 25 the fish were more active in higher grav....I didnt know there was a deases issue involved though....thnx

    +1(as the saying goes)
fish do better with lower salinity to a point around 1.20(the reason we don't go lower then that is long term exposer causes kidney failure). corals tend to do better in a bit higher salinity.

the opean oceans salinity varies from 1.24-1.28, sea can vary farther off that spectrum. a popular sea to catch marine life is the red sea and its around 1.30.
    animals are quite adaptable.
really for a tank you probably best if you have the the salinity to where the majority of your animals come from.

edit: the reason fish do better at lower salinity is there bodies work less to maintain the osmotic pressure between them and the saltwater

I don't know why I think this or if it's even true... but isn't that the same reason corals like higher SG? Just you know, same difference?
