Is it just a silly myth or can this scary truth cause your tank to look like a creek? If you have reason to back up your answer, please post it! This applies to any answer you choose.

Im curious to see what people say because as I read more and more on this discussed topic, some people say its myth and some people say its fact. Those 2 choices are growing in popularity so I wanted to see what the great minds of 3reef come up with and why!

Its more added light to your system, more light can = more algea, its kinda the reverse of reducing your light period to get rid of algea.

i dont believe sunlight is the culprit of the algae. its the available nutrients

I have never done any research on it, but it seems to me to be a logical conlusion that more light would equal more algae growth. We always have algae in our tanks, we just control it with lighting periods, controlled feeding, natural export of nutrients and maintenance.

hard to say, i have mine next to a window, my tank has gone through the normal new tank algae phases, and none of the algae i got was to bad. So far the worst algae that i have been dealing with is very stubborn film algae. The window next to my tank could be adding to this.

But i guess it varies from tank to tank depending on equipment and stuff

EXACTLY! Sunlight is what your tank gets in the ocean, if your nutrients are in check. What could be better than nature for nature

My tank never had a horrible algae bloom, or any real issue with it... And it sites next to a window.
