I filled out my taxes today using turbo tax. I started off in the free edition because I don't have anything out of the ordinary, we not really. Got to a question where I said yes, it informed me I needed to pay the 14.95 for the basic edition to be able to calculate that feature. THEN asked me a few questions after I agreed to the 14.95 and said I don't need to fill out that portion.

OK so 15$ down the drain no biggie, right? I then proceeded to the end where it asked me how I would like to pay the 15$, where I said "take it from my return." (I didn't feel like pulling out a credit card if it could just be taken from my return) Lastly I got to the end of the return where it charged me the 14.95 and also another 29.95 "return processing fee." A google search later I found out the reason they are charging me the 29.95 is to take the payment for the basic edition from my return. I clicked the back button a few times and paid the 14.95 by credit card, and now they aren't charging me the additional 29.95.

So the basic edition cost 14.95 but they were going to charge me 44.90. This society has really become overly greedy. We will have to go through another great depression to reinstate our values. This is one I really don't want to say "told ya so!" about but I think that is what it will come to.

When I saw those commercials about the "free" service, I knew there had to be a catch! Makes me somewhat glad that I'm a math-a-phobe so I have to hire an accountant to do my taxes :)

Hey, I think it's fun to try and figure out what HR Block will get sued for each year. Man they get hit with whopper judgements.

Ya gotta love it.....now for this small fee, you can have your money today rather than waiting for the government to send you money. REALLY??? Where do I sign???? DUH

One state found that it was like 60% interest if put on an A.P.R. basis.

I did the same thing with turbo tax. My dad uses it and got a free trial, so I loaded it and went through. At the end when I was about to send my return off, I click send and a window popped up saying that I needed to buy the full edition for me to send my return. It was a complete waste of time. I wish I would have known that in the beginning.
I actually volunteer to do lower income people's taxes with VITA, volunteer income tax return assistance, so next time I go in, I will get there early and do my own.

Those sites that offer a free basic return is for the federal return only and you have to make under a certain amount. I used turbotax for a few years till I started making more and now I pay 30 bucks I think. They charge for the state return, but in Indiana the gov. has a free site called Ifile that is free for the state return, no limit on income. So I used to do all mine free but now have to pay a little... rules and regulations on everything:p

ditto on the IRS site, lots of truly free ones that fit your criteria. Also many states have a free site for the state tax part (well Indiana does). Got my refunds within 5 days of filing direct deposited.
