    No, algae growing in the fuge, is fine IMO, I'd rather it grow there than my DT. If it gets bad, yes, pull it out, that removes nasty stuff and allows more to grow. But an algae scrubber is seperate from your fuge.

    I don't have a sump so that design wouldn't be the best.

    How's it going to be any different than the swimming pool concept? except smaller and cheaper?

    run it external in a nearby closet! lol, IDK, just seems more do able than a outdoor swimming pool one;)

    I have a work bench next to it. Wouldnt I need less power to get it back in the tank?

    Honestly, if you're going to go through this much work, I'd just do a full on sump with return, maybe put a small sandbed in it. You could still use a rubbermaid tote, or better yet get a 40g or up. should be cheap;)
