I recently decided to change my 39g fowlr to a reef...Right now, I barely have any flow, and I was wondering if 2-800gph powerheads would be an overkill...? so the total of my system would be around 1850 gph. I plan on keeping SPS, nems, and some softies. Also, just so I dont have to start a new thread...Im going to be purchasing a MH system with a 250w bulb. How far from the tank should I have it? I was thinking 8-9 inches...I dont have a chiller, and I dont want to heat my tank, so what do you think would be appropriate?

I think the flow rate you currently have should be good for SPS, considering the volume of water which is probably displaced by rock. You could add more flow if you want, but it won't be necessary.

I would have the MH about a foot above the tank if you don't want it to heat the water.

Place the powerheads on opposite sides of the tank pointing parallel to each other.

I have two 175W MH lights about 18 inches above my 75 gallon tank and I have to run a fan in the canopy to keep it from heating the water too much. The fan is cheap and works fine for me...
