SO, how much space do you need to give a torch coral? Do they only do that with other corals in that family?

Usually, they'll attack anything that isn't a euphyllia (same genus, includes frogspawn and hammer). They need their tentacle's normal extended length + 50% to be safe about it.

So you could put two different frog spawn corals in close proximity without worry of an attack? How far do their tentacles stretch?

Yes. I had a purple tipped frogspawn, a green tipped frogspawn and hammer touching without any problems. They don't seem to bother each other.

From my experience, euphylias are pretty defensive like that. They will glue their tentacle to almost any coral they touch. I had my frogspawn start a war with my lobophylia and the frogspawn won. My most aggressive coral is my chalices and hydnophora. The hydonophora has a 100% death rate against all the corals it has touched.

Thanks! That is actaully what I was hoping to be able to do, place a pink tipped and a green tipped next to each other. I thought the bubble coral was in the same family too?? I am completely new to the coral thing and this set up will be my first attempt at keeping coral.

What is a hydnophora? Does it have a common name? Does it have sweeper tentacles? How would it initiate contact?

What do chalices do to initiate an attack? Are they similar to the euphylias in that you can place chalices near other chalices but not other types of coral?

Sorry for all the newby questions, but would much appreciate the information. I would like to get all this stuff buttoned down BEFORE I start adding stuff. ;)

I just looked up images of hydnophora coral, so I think I am pretty straight about identity. That is a pretty crazy mortality ratio. How does the contact usually happen?
