I don't think that I can take this any longer,

Hopefully I don't loose everything. Our power has been out since Friday at 1am and Just came back on an hour ago(Saturday at 9pm).

We live in New Hampshire and it's been Pretty cold the last couple of days 20-30 Degrees, and our house got down to below freezing. Coincidentally I purchased a battery backup that only lasted a couple of hours, and I was able to charge it several times to at least keep water circulating through the tank. Plus I was able to float hot water jugs in the tank to try to keep the temp up as much as possible, and I wrapped the tank with just about every blanket in the house to keep the the heat in. After the power came on I almost didn't want to take them off for fear of what I would find. I figured that I was going to loose all the fish, and would have to start from scratch. At least initially most of or fish seem alive.

Anyway My question is how fast should I raise the temp, Normally the tank runs between 79-80 Degrees, and now is down to just above 60 Degrees.

Incredibly enough I think that I have only lost 1 flame angle fish, or at least he hasn't moved yet, maybe he is just hibernating. Also one of my leathers looks horrible, almost like he is clung to the rocks, have to see how that turns out.

I guess it's time that we bought a wood stove or a generator for the next time.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

My first impulse is to say not to bring the temp up too fast......although I am anything but sure on this one. We'll just treat my post as a glorified bump and go with it. Good luck. K+ for your efforts, both past and present.

As with any tank crash.. do NOT panic!! Do things slow, raise the temp maybe a degree or two an hour, more if you feel gutsy!! I wish you the best of luck and karma as I live in WI and just got 12" of snow as well!!

If it had been all snow I don't think that it would have been an issue, It was all Ice that took down trees everywhere, the whole seacoast area took a huge beating, over 1 million without power. I'm just glad that we got power on after only 2 days, they are estimating up to two weeks in many areas.

Just thought I would post an update, as a result of the outage we did end up loosing our Flame Angle and our Sun Polyp. Fortunately that was all we lost, all the leathers have recovered, took a couple weeks, but they all seem fine now, just a slightly lighter shade of yellow.

I was amazed that all the other fish that made it didn't get sick at all, thank god, and our yellow tang has never looked better. Maybe he's an arctic yellow tang.. lol

A generator is definitely on our list of things to buy soon, we have already looked around and they are impossible to find right now.

    Thanks for the advice

I too live in new england. I lost our power 6 days in the first storm and then again days on the christmas storm. I guees I was lucky that I bought a generator for the tank and also the house. I have a 150 fresh water tank and the 220 salt. I am on the border of nh and maine so I defenatly feel for you. My wife and i bought a generator after the first storm realizing the thousands of dollars we have into our tank. I dont know the setails of your tank but for us it was a great investment and is now hooked onto our house. Kplus to you for your efforts. my fish looked like death 4 hrs into the outage.

That is good news! I just had my AC go out a week ago and the tank got up to 87, and I was dropping bags of ice in all day. My BTA is kind of stressed out still even after a week, but all else seems to be OK.

K+ for your efforts and good outcome
