    Probably was the salinity swing than. What I do if I get behind on top offs is fill the tank back up a little bit at a time.

    I never add more than 1 gal. at a time

    That is enough to kill your shrimp!
    Not only the salinity issue but the change in pH and alkalinity. All three of these factors could have led to the death of your shrimp. They are delicate and don't handle shifts in pH, salinity or alkalinity as well as other inverts.
