I think I should be getting 1 to 4 ratio for Product to waste.. Appears I'm getting more like 1 to 6. Filters are fairly new. Any ideas?

Check to see if it has a way to control the waste ratio, should be something in the operating instructions

I haven't replace the membrane so maybe it is damaged and letting more water through?
How often do you replace the membrane?

The membrane should last 1-3 years depending on usage.

If you use water from the cold tap, you're likely to get much lower ratios than what's advertised. They usually advertise a room temperature result.

Try using about 1/3 hot and full cold water and see if that works better. I can get a 1:3 ratio that way, a 1:2 with hot water (but I worry about TDS when it's too hot), or 1:4/5 with just cold water.

you probably need to trim the flow restrictor. just do a search here, Matt had a thread about it a month or so ago.

NEVER EVER try to temper or blend hot and cold water with an RO system!
This is the quickest way to ruin a membrane there is. membranes are held together with glue and both the glue and the plastic film the membrane is constructed of are damaged at anything over 113 degrees F, and very quickly too. Do you remember being in the shower and someone flushed the toilet or started the washer? You got scalded and thats the same thing that happens to a membrane. Its almost impossible to adjust temperatures at such low flows without a tempering valve.

One of the problems with most RO and RO/DI vendors is they still insist on using a fixed type flow restrictor. They assume we are all dysfunctional or idiots and cannot trim a capillary tube to the correct length or adjust a needle valve for a precise 4:1 waste ratio. Capillary tubes are the way to go and cost maybe $3-$5. You measure your waste and treated flows, do a very quick calculation, trim it to length and stick it in the waste line. Takes about 5 minutes and you are done and have a more precise system.

Colder water and lower pressure both can cause increased waste flows. In order to troubleshoot the problem you need to know your pressure at the membrane and water temperature. Tap water, RO only and waste TDS numbers help too.

Keep your waste ratio at somewhere between 3 to 6 waste to 1 good for best membrane life and water quality. Adjust waste by adjusting temperature is a very bad thing to do, you adjust waste with a flow restrictor not pressure or temperature. Use cold water only, never hot or warm. If production is low a booster pump is by far the best option. Colder water also delivers lower TDS than warm wate rsince it is more dense, your DI will last longer and perform better.

    You can get a capillary tube restrictor at www.spectrapure.com , www.buckeyefieldsupply.com , or www.h2osplashwaterfilters.com .
