So I am in the process of cycling my 40 breeder. It took a couple days for nitrite or ammonia to show. It still hasn't spiked that high yet so I am waiting on that.

I went away for the weekend (Saturday-Monday). When I left the walls of the tank and some rocks were starting to get diatom blooms. It wasn't all that bad, just a little brown algae here and there.

...when I returned the tank had what appears to be hair algae growing every where (walls, rocks, barebottom, return lock-line, etc).
I have never seen hair algae like this. It's got me worried.. Some of the rock that I used was from a tank that had GHA. I thought I was safe because this rock had been exposed to weather, outside, in the sun for about 3 years. It was cleaned and rinsed before adding to the tank.

    Pictures to follow.

It's hard to tell from the picture if it's green hair algae or just green algae.
I can assure that it is most defintely hairy.

Um, I wouldn't worry about an algae bloom while you're cycling too much.

That's actually not too bad. I would just scrape the glass down with a razor blade or plastic scraper. Maybe get your CUC soon? At least a few critters, once your nitrate/ammonia spike is mostly over with of course

Edit: rock can also be scrubbed with a tooth brush and skim water with a net for floating algae off of rocks.

Thanks. I figured it wasn't much to worry about during a cycle but I have honestly never had an issue with gha during a cycle and certainly never saw it growing on the glass.

    Thanks again

IME you can get your CUC snails about a week after your diatoms show up...helps a lot.
the algae usually goes like this:

    diatoms
    green film
    GHA
then most die off or get controlled by your CUC as the tank matures.

Good ro/di water helps keep the problem from continuing also.
