I purchased a large Tyree Pink lemonade frag from a swap last weekend. I acclimated it to my light for a few days then puttied the coral down. I noticed that part of it is bleaching at the base. No tissue loss, just turning white. I have a 6-39watt tek light with all new ATI and KZ bulbs. The coral is roughly 12" below the surface of the water. Fixture is roughly 6" above the surface of the water.

    Params are as follows:

    SG: 1.025
    dKH: 8
    Calc: 410
    Mag: 1350
    Temp: 80.1
pH: fluctuates from 7.88 when lights turn on to 8.05 when lights turn off
    Ammo: 0
    Nitrite: 0
    Nitrate 0-5
Not sure what my phosphates are.

I don't run carbon, gfo, fuge, or biopellets. I run a modified SWC 160 cone.

I am having some minor cyano issues right now. I plan on running biopellets in the near future. I have cut back feeding recently to once every other day. I used to feed 3 times a day, but my anthias croaked so no more need for feeding that often.

    Thoughts?

If you don't run gfo,no macro,or bps odd are there is a good number of phosphates in the water. I would try to get a Hanna or skip it and get some gfo in the tank and some macro to help bring it down
Best stab I could take it.
    Good Luck

GFO is known for being a cause in pinched mantle disease in clams so I stay far far away from it.

I will test for po4 at work tomorrow.

I know hundreds of reefers that run gfo with clams some of the biggest clams I have even seen were in a sps dominated tank with reactor full of gfo running
It's real hard get phosphates down but once down it's not to hard to maintain them low
    Are you using ro/di ?

Yup, using RO/DI and getting 0tds.. I got my info from someone on another forum who helped write a book on clams. I have also seen other tanks with clams where they ran gfo, but I don't want to risk it.

Just did a 20G waterchange on Monday.

Is the bleached area around the putty? This happens to me when I use glue to stick frags. Kinda kills the tissue next to it.

This was mentioned on another forum actually. I never knew that putty could burn the flesh of corals until tonight.

No putty touched the flesh of any of the sps frags. I cut the nipple of the plugs and use the rest of the plug as the glue point. The putty is roughly 1/4" below the frag.

I could well be that. The issue there is the putty puts off heat as it cures, so it might be a 1/4" away, but that's plenty close enough for heat to conduct.

I'd keep an eye on it and monitor any changes. If it gets worse, we can pick our brains some more.

We all know how some things can suddenly take a turn for the worse. I decided to do a proactive 1" fragging. That way if it goes to the crapper while I am at work, I still have a chance of part of it surviving.
