Hey everyone, thanks for checking out this thread...

So, I must confess - I HATE the way my highly functional DSB looks at the glass' edge... Would it do any "bio damage" if I were to vacuum off the few inches at the sands edge and replace it with clean sand? I would say about 1/6th the total sand...

    Thanks for your input!

I do this every so often, I am very particular about how my tank looks and am always doing some sort of maintenance on it. I have siphoned out the top layer of sand and replaced it several times with no problems. However, I do it in steps, such as 1/2 of the tank one day, wait a few days then do the other 1/2.

Will it do any "bio damage" I would say yes it will do some, but not enough to make any difference.

I would suggest you add some cerith snails to your tank, they normally do a very good job of keeping the top edge of the sand pretty clean at the glass. During the day they will burrow down into the sand, stirring it up keeping it much cleaner.

We have an orange spotted sleeper goby, and he stirs up the entire sandbed all day long within 24 hours i'd say he has the majority of the place covered.

That why I have 1/4 inch sand bed. I like a very clean look that's hard to achieve with a DSB.
