It may be the same reason that chitons and limpets return to the same spot after foraging. Theory has it that they lay down a pheromone trail and just follow that trail. Maybe the snails are attracted to the other snails because there is no other pheromone trails for them to follow, the only pheromones are on the snails themselves. Different snail type different pheromone type.
