So I received a phone call a few months ago from the Keane Organization. The representative was overly friendly and told me that there were unclaimed assets that I was entitled too. He gave me one of my old addresses (10 years ago) and my dad's name. I thought something was fishy so I called my dad and asked him about it. He immediately thought "scam" as well and told me not to worry about it.

Well these phone calls continued and two weeks ago I gave the guy another shot. He said there was a stock in my name that my dad opened up and they lost track of our address so it has just been sitting there with no where to go. If I signed some papers they would take 10% out of it as fees and mail me a check for the rest. Sounded simple enough so I started looking into this company..

I'm pretty sure it's legit!! It sounds way too good to be true, but according to the BBB they are an A+ company that has been around since the late 40's and all they deal with is unclaimed property. I asked a lawyer friend, my parents, and my grandparents and after each doing some research they all said to go for it. (It's a pretty nice chunk for a college student..so it's highly tempting)

But before I do, I wanted to run it by 3reef. There is one of everyone here, so surely someone knows something about this.

    Any info is greatly appreciated!

    Ivan

Edit: The documents do not require bank account information or anything. He said the only thing is that I will need to send a w-9 form with my SSN on it. I'm on my parent's lifelock though, so I doubt there would be much anyone could do with that.

Simple, ask your dad if he did indeed buy stock in your name. He should know and even have a record of it.

I did. He said he didn't.

    BUT

I forgot to add this, I think we figured out what it is.

My grandparents opened up some McDonald's stock for me when I was little. They could have put it in my dad's name. The last time we did anything with it was while we were at the address he gave me.

that info they gave you, i could give you if i had your name. that type of info is all over and easy to find. your dads name your old address. DONT give anyone your SS number who has been calling you. tell them to mail you the info. scammers know that sending things threw the mail is a federal offence. and they dont want to go there!
i never answer questions on the phone. i always tell them mail me the info. if they ask for my address i say well you should have that right in front of you.

    WOW!!!

I'd say get everything you can in writing.

People's names, phone numbers, their intentions, their privacy policy.

All that and consult a lawyer.

If you are talking a few thousand (or many thousand possibly) - then a few hundred dollars in lawyer's fees may be well worth it.

If this company is going to take 10% for you - make them earn it and put the burden of proving their legitimacy on THEM.

If they are legit and want that money - they will make you feel at ease and comfortable sending your personal info.

Is there a way to search for the stock yourself? Such as state unclaimed asset websites.

There's nothing more financially important than credit and your social security. Although this may be tempting, I'd rather pass than to be potentially risking a ruined credit, unauthorized charges, potential jail and money and time spent in court attempting to restore these things.

Although the individual whom you spoke with states that he's with a particular legitimate business, how can this be proven from a conversation over the phone?

The documents he sent me were through the mail. The phone numbers they called from and email addresses match those of the business..i know that would probably be easy to fake, but that's the best I can do in that department. They said they will mail me the w-9 form to fill out.

Every source I can find has issues just like mine where the people are skeptical, but it turns out that is all legitimate and they end up getting their assets.

I'm going to take a few more days and do as much research as possible.
