I run 2 trays of carbon in my tidepool II sump/fuge. It keeps the water crystal clear.

carbon will remove good things as well as bad, but the bad are much more important to remove than the good, and the good can be replaced via water changes.

Another good thing to put in one is phosphate media. Or turn it into a DIY calcium reactor.
