    Hello,
I was going to start a 220gal but decided to do a 135gal instead until I can reinforce the floor. Therefore, I need to rethink the setup and needs some advice. It will start off as a fowlr and maybe add some softies later?

The tank is 72Lx18Wx24D with no overflow/drilled holes, and I will use a sump, which will around 5' from pump to return. I have the following choices:
    (a) overflow box that is ~800gph (similar to CS100 model with one 1" bulkhead)
    (b) overbox that is ~1400gph (similar to CS202 model with two 1" bulkhead)
    (c) return pump Rio 3100
    (d) return pump Mag drive 18

I was going to use b+d but now wonder if that would be too much? what do you think?

Should I split the return into 2 outlets?

In addition, I have a used skimmer that came with the tank. Since I will make my own sump, I would like to make sure the skimmer works before adding the baffles. Is there a way to test the skimmer without an established tank?

    Thank you!

Welcome, sounds like youve got a great idea on what your gonna need. Personally, I would drill the tank, if it's not tempered. If it is you have no choice than to go with a overflow box.

I would split the returns, I did in my 75 gallon and it works well. I run a mag 7 I think you could get away with either a 9 or 12, 18 is a little big.

All you need to see if your skimmer works is throw it in some water and if the pump starts, it works. Fresh or salt. It won't do much in fresh but bubble but you'll know it works.

    Were it me I'd:

    - Drill a single 1.5" hole and run one durso type overflow
    - Use a single Mag 18 as a return pump - at 6' of head (add a foot for pipe friction) it will give you 1125 gph, which is good for a 135
    - Single return with a Sea Swirl attached

One other thing, have you considered plumbing an external pump like Reeflo Dart? It will cost a little more, but will last longer and will allow an upgrade to your 220 later.

Thank you for your responds! I would like to utilize what I currently have in hope to reduce the cost. Also, not interested in drilling a glass tank... I can just see a disaster in progress if I drill. :(

I'd take it to a local glass shop and have them drill it for you. IMO, I'd feel a TON safer with a drilled tank, than having to rely on overflow boxes. I know there are plenty of safe guards, but drilling seems to have a TON less failures.
