Upgrade current skimmer or buy new one?

I have read reports from many people on boards out there that they got good results by adding a kent marine venturi valve:

And a Mag 5 pump.

May be worth a try.

 

The berlin has no venturi system on it?



Is this why they made this?

Naut....up there (last post) is a pic of what I have (only I have a HOT version)
It does have a venturi...at the bottom of the blackair hose....but they are putting out a "turbo" pump to improve it....it must be some type of needle wheel or something...here is the pitch from Red Sea web site

Convert your existing Berlin Venturi skimmer to the new Berlin Turbo. The Berlin Turbo Upgrade kit includes the Berlin Turbo Pump with 18 blade TurboJet air injector together with all parts and full instructions to complete the upgrade.

Matt was suggesting perhaps replacing the venturi with a Kent marine venturi as a less expensive option...

Do you know what the GPH flow through the berlin pump is? I can't find that info anywhere...

 

I am not sure what the GPH of the pump is but I think the turbo air injector is in the pump so if you substitute another pump for it I am not sure it will work the same.

Thanks John! I knew their recommended pumps when I bought it have since been upped a bit so I would need to get a new pump anyway......

Craig, names not Cindy, but I'm assuming you meant me ;D - the upgrade kit from Red Sea is about $65....

If I can upgrade the venturi and use the Mag 5 with that, that would be least expensive..but.....I gotta research that a little more....

Let me know if you can't find anything on that modification, it took me a while, but I found some somewhere.
