Upgraded: do I still need this?

Hi all! It took a couple of days to get posting rights; I could have used your input earlier-I've spent $500 on my system just this week!

What I have now: 29gal FOWLR, 45 lb LR, 3 NO, 4 fish, Emperor biowheel 400, skilter. It's 10 years old, and has had its share of deaths, but all in all-it's been a stable, low maintenance system.

What I have on the way: CPR Bak-Pak 2R+ with venturi mod and BBX (I know...Remora...I got this new for under $100) and a Catalina Aquarium brand 65X2 PC. I'm going for a softie/shroom/polyp/SPS system with fish.

The question: once I get my skimmer, how do I use my biowheel (if at all?)

The skilter is already gone. I'm guessing that I still use it for the mechanical part of filtration, and get rid of the wheels. But y'all are the experts, and I've learned a whole lot in the last week from you guys, sooo....what do you think?

PS: once I get the Catalina Aquarium light, I'll share specs and part brands with you. It seems to be a few steps up from Jebo/Odessea, at about the Orbit level, but we'll see. I purchased all of the options, which put it at $160. I don't think I'm quite gung-ho enough to go to halides (yet.)

Technically the answer is no. You might want to remove each wheel several days apart and leave the filter in for water movement though. (I.e. the filter stays but the biowheels leave).

 

Exactly, the LR takes the place of the bio-wheel. It can't hurt, but is redundant. Use the Emperor to provide mechanical filtration and a place to add carbon, phosban etc.
