Hey guys, so I found a 40 gallon breeder on craig's list for $35, and imma go check it out today. If there aren't many scratches on it and no leaks, I'm picking it up. It's gonna be a nice upgrade from my 10 gallon.

Now, here's a slight problem. The tank is going to be in my bedroom. This means that the equipment can't be too loud, almost silent. I'm not going to have any kind of sump, but I'm also going to be understocking the tank. As far as protein skimmers go, I know most make an ample amount of noise and are expensive. Would I be able to get away with a big HOB filter, stuffed with chaeto and carbon? and if not, is there a quiet, internal skimmer that you might be able to recommend for me? thanks!

EDIT: I'm going to have 50 pounds of LR in there, 1 inch deep sandbed. Stocking is most probably going to be lps corals and softies, along with my pair of false percs, blue damsel, and I'm going to be adding a 6 line wrasse

You could do a hang on filter for your mechanical filtration and carbon. and then a hang on refugium for chaeto. I also have a 40B, but I rely on bio pellets and a huge skimmer.

I was hoping I could fit in both carbon and chaeto into the HOB

I am interested in hearing responses on this......my initial thought is why not have both in there? I think it's possible to do without a skimmer since you'll have a good amount of LR and a low bioload. I would just count on staying consistent with water changes.

2 aquaclear's will do the trick. 1 as fuge the other for mech and chem filtration. As long as you can keep water changes upto date and resist the urge to buy a clown tang you can easily go skimmerless

Yeah, you can mod aquaclears into a fuge of sorts. I did one on my 5 gallon pico a couple years back
