Greg from what I've read on 3reef forms bio balls are a nitrate factory if you don't do regular maintenance. If I am wrong please tell me what I should look out for. I don't want to make a noob mistake and have it cost me big.

Oh BTW I got the RO Diablo 250 INT.

I've always thought about running bioballs in my refugium. It's the exact same as live rock, right? It holds bacteria. My water is 100 percent filtered through a 100 micron filter sock before it hits the fuge.

Sorry for the delay in answering!

I think it is now possible to actually take advantage of this filtration methods downsides.

Let’s think about it. Why don’t we use wet dry systems on reef tanks? Because we have all read that they should not be used on a reef tank.

    Wet Dry Filtration:

Benefit: converts ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate faster than any other form of filtration that we know.
Benefit: excellent aeration of the water

Down side: converts ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate faster than any other form of filtration that we know. This results in high nitrate. AKA: nitrate factory.
Down side: does nothing for phosphates

What if we can get the benefits without any of the downsides? Would it not be an ideal filtration method?

I haven't tried this but a wet/dry with a bio pellet reactor could be very effective
