Thanks! If I go for bigger than 75, I want to get one big enough for tangs. I'll look into the 6' tanks.

75 and 90 are just right for some species of tang but only one usually and your limited on your selection. I bought a sailfin tang and am very happy with the choice though in 4 years or so I'm almost positive if hes still kickin ill upgrade to keep him happy.

i went from a 55 gallon to my current 180 just by sliding the 55 out to the center of the floor, placing and setting up the 180 in its spot, filling the 180 minus the water, rock, sand etc leaving room for everything in the 55 to fill it up.....then 2 days later adding sand via siphon to 180 along with adding rock, then start it dripping till fish need to be moved over, had no fish die and no drastic spikes....was alot easier than i thought it would be but didnt have the money to start from scratch....

I'm pricing things out online RIGHT NOW!! Woot!!

Question: live rock is very expensive. If I add live sand, and some established live rock from my current tank, can I just add base rock? Will the base rock do an okay job at filtering until it comes alive?

    Thanks!

cool.. get about 1/4th ratio LR to Base.. Base takes a while to become live, so take your time. mine took about 3 months before I could notice a difference. for base rock I highly suggest reefcleaners.org, I use it in my tank and will order 2 of the 50lb packages when im about to set up my 75 in january. also, base rock wont filter until it becomes live with anerobic bacteria, its a gradual process.. oh and dont worry about live sand, just get dead sand and make sure its not quartz(silicate) based..

I just upgraded from a 55 to a 125 a couple weeks ago. All I ended up doing was sliding the 55 out. Setting up and filling the 125. I then drained the 55 into buckets and slid it under the 125 as a sump. Connected plumbing, tested and then moved the rock in. Once the water had cleared enough to see the back I added the fish and corals. I havent had any issues except for a couple snails died and I cant find my cleaner shrimp.

Oh yeah, and I added the water from the 55 back into the new tank. I havent had any AM / Nitrate issues but then I only have 4 small fish rihgt now =)
