I went with all base rock and my cycle was pretty quick. It will save you a large amount of money if you don't mind the possibility of it taking a bit longer to establish. Bulk reef supply's pukani rock is great, and I'm sure there are lots of other great looking base rocks available.

How did I miss this thread!? (I'm like the 5th person to say this...shame). I'm planning on upgrading my 29 to a 40g breeder!!! So don't worry KC, you're not alone in the upgrading bandwagon...(not bandwagon, something else would fit better...just can't think of the word!!)

Good luck with everything!! And yes, I recommend using base rock somewhere in the mix too. It's cheap and it works great. (I'm going to be using base rock too!)

Might be a good time to have the plumbers add a nice ro/di system if you don't already have one.

I definitely thought about that. I'll look into some systems and see. I am getting sick of driving 40 minutes round trip to get some water!

Yeah...after doing a rough price estimate of everything I'll need, I definitely think base rock is the way to go. I have like $500 of live rock in my 37 gallon...I can't even imagine the cost to fill up a huge tank! That will save me a lot of money. I'll just put in the live rock I currently have, and use base rock for the rest.
