So I got some astraea snails and some turbos and every now and then they flip over and will stay at a certain spot for a long time. Should I flip them back over?

They also are not doing a very a good job on the rocks, should I get more? I have 7 in a 36 gal w/ 50lbs of rock...

sometimes you will have to flip them and sometimes they will get themselves

as for the rock work I have had better luck with hermits for rock work

there is no such thing as upside down snails as far as i'm concerned.. if they have flipped over from falling off the glass or the live rocks, you have to help them flip over.. the snail you have to worry the least about are the nassarius snails as they will flip themselves over.. the one you have to worry about the most are turbo snails.. any other snail, i would still recommend flipping them over

Turbos are no problem, they will flip themselves over. Astreas can have a problem. They may need help. Also, I think one turbo per 20 gallons is sufficient, otherwise they will starve. Not sure about Astreas. I read somewhere 1 snail per gallon......but I am not convinced. John Maloney at Reefcleaners.org would know. He is a sponsor. Puts together clean up crews for tanks continuously.

Hi IME - They try and flip themselves upright but cant always achieve it , some do and some just cant - so best to help them out if you spot them like this - its better than dealing with the most horrible smell in reef keeping = decaying snails

I only have turbo's, and normally they are not a problem. But tonight something strange happened. One was upside down, on the sand, but it's foot was attached to a small piece of shell. It must have gripped it, then taken it with it on it's way down. 45 minutes later it was still upside down in the same spot. It was like it couldn't figure out what to do since its foot was gripping something, so I flipped it back over. Interesting I stumbled into this thread on the same night ;)

turbos in my honest opinion need the most help, casualty is usually highest with them.. but yeah all in all, give your snail a hand, especially when you actually spot them struggling

So today I got up and was looking at the tank and the two largest areas of long green hair algae were gone!! Nibbled all the way down to the rock... I was excited although I think I will get more hermits...

Can you put more than one emerald crab in the tank? Or should I put and an arrow or Sally lightfoot?
